|Discover® Announces Winners of "Discover Works of Art, Acts of Charity" Card Design Contest|
Contest raised over $35,000 for Operation Homefront
RIVERWOODS, Ill., Aug 11, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Discover® today announced the winners of the company's "Discover Works of Art, Acts of Charity" card design contest. Grand prize winner Marcus David Martinez was awarded $5,000 for his patriotic-themed artwork. Rainna Langley received $2,500 for her card design, and third place recipient, Danielle Kasony was awarded $1,000 for her card design.
The online contest, which launched June 21, provided artists the opportunity to participate in the card design creative process. Artists created and shared original artwork by visiting http://www.discovercard.com/cardartdesigncontest. Artists were able to submit designs from June 21-July 4 which exemplified the American spirit or were inspired by the United States.
From July 5-July 15, Facebook users voted on their favorite designs. The contest received over 3,000 card design entries. The grand prize winning design could be used on a future Discover card.
Military Families Benefit
In connection with the contest, Discover is donating over $35,000 to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization, which provides emergency financial and other assistance to American military service members, wounded warriors and their families. Discover's donation was based on the following:
"The Discover Works of Art, Acts of Charity contest enabled Discover fans and artists to share in the creation of a new patriotic-themed card design in an easy, fun and interactive way," said Sanjay Gosalia, director of acquisition at Discover. "Not only did we receive great artwork with enthusiastic voter participation, the designs uploaded and votes cast helped benefit our military servicemen, servicewomen and families in need."
"Generous and innovative partners like Discover enable Operation Homefront to provide vital aid to the families of military members and Wounded Warriors," said Amy Palmer, Chief Operating Officer of Operation Homefront. "We thank them for including us in their Works of Art, Acts of Charity program that not only provides donations, but also illustrates the need to help improve the lives of these heroes."
Honorable mentions included card designs by Heidi Bennett, Brannan Pedersen Vines, and Monet St. Juste. They each received $500.
This is the second card design contest Discover has launched online. In 2009, Discover held a contest for Facebook users to submit a new design for the Discover Student Card. Thousands of designs were submitted and a cassette tape-themed design was chosen as the grand prize winner and has become a popular card of choice for Discover Student Cardmembers.
