Discover Gives Back to Education Through Its Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes
Meridian, MS., Feb. 6, 2012– Discover today announced that it is donating $25,000 to Southeast Lauderdale High School in Meridian, Mississippi, as part of their Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes promotion. Southeast Lauderdale was chosen by Darlene Harrison, an Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes October monthly winner. Harrison is a member of the Meridian First Ladies Civitan Club, which has supported the Special Education Department at the high school. Discover presented both Harrison and Southeast Lauderdale with ceremonial $25,000 checks at a school assembly held this morning.
Throughout the year, every purchase made on a Discover card is automatically entered for a chance to win one of 150 daily prizes and a monthly prize of $25,000, which Discover will match with a $25,000 donation to a public school of the winner’s choosing. A grand prize of $1 million will be awarded at the end of the year.
Harrison won the monthly prize when she made a $35.00 purchase at a Sam’s Club Gas Station with her Discover card in October.
“I was pleasantly shocked at the news that I had won,” said Harrison. “The ability to choose a public school to receive a matching $25,000 makes this even more rewarding and as a continuation of my Civitan involvement, I hope Southeast Lauderdale High School can use a portion of these funds towards their Special Education department. I want to thank Discover for giving me this opportunity.”
Dwayne Taylor, principal of Southeast Lauderdale High School, was also shocked by the news. “The call was so surprising that it was hard to believe at first. I would like to thank Darlene for picking our school with this wonderful surprise and also thank Discover for providing our school with this opportunity. There are many things our school needs and certainly some of the funding will be used toward Special Education classes. I’ll have to meet with the teachers to discuss other options as well.”
“We believe supporting education is critical,” said Gayle Prete, director of portfolio marketing at Discover. “We know consumers will appreciate not only the great prizes we’re offering with this sweepstakes, but also the chance to make a difference at public schools across the country.”
